Noodopvang Schiedam (Buitenhavenweg)
Since late 2021 the municipality of Schiedam has used ships moored at the Buitenhavenweg (near the lock) as temporary emergency reception for asylum seekers and status holders, with capacity provided across vessels such as the MS Diana and MS Azolla. The reception ships were swapped and upgraded over time, with a larger boat brought in as pressure on reception remained high, and the management agreement extended to 1 July 2027. Coverage focused on the changing vessels rather than any incidents.

Cost
Dutch asylum reception is funded by central government through the COA. At an illustrative benchmark of about €184 per person per night for emergency reception (noodopvang), the 76 people recorded here on 13 August 2025 imply roughly €5.1m per year. This is an order-of-magnitude figure for context only, not a site-specific invoice — emergency reception typically runs around three times the cost of a regular centre.
