Background
In October 2021 the local MP, Bell Ribeiro-Addy, reported that Home Office contractors were using the Dudley Hotel in Clapham to house around 80 refugees, including about 50 children. She described poor and unsuitable conditions — inadequate food that did not meet cultural or dietary needs, accommodation ill-suited to families with pregnant women and young children, unmet health needs and no play facilities — and said hotel management had at one point been obstructive, stopping supporters from entering and forcing a meeting to take place outdoors in the rain[1]. The MP and her team ran casework surgeries at the hotel and wrote to the Mayor of London (over travel/oyster cards), to the local NHS body (over GP registration) and to Lambeth Council (over school places for the children). Beyond this casework the public record for the site is thin. The operator, London Hotel Group, now lists the building as the “Clapham South Dudley”, a commercial budget hotel[2], and no source records when the contingency use ended.

No per-site Home Office contract figure has been published for the Dudley Hotel, so the following is an illustrative benchmark only. At the £170 per person per night figure reported by the Migration Observatory[3], the roughly 80 people documented here in October 2021 would imply order-of-magnitude exposure of about £13,600 per night, or around £5 million a year had that occupancy been sustained — figures that are indicative only, given that the duration of the contingency use is not published.
