azc Den Helder (Burg Ritmeesterweg)

The asylum centre on Burgemeester Ritmeesterweg in Den Helder (the former Doggershoek complex) has been the scene of repeated violence. There were stabbings in March 2023 (three arrests) and in May 2024, the latter resulting in a two-year prison sentence for attempted manslaughter. In August 2024 an armed arrest team raided the site, supported by a helicopter, to detain a 38-year-old Algerian resident wanted over a homicide in France. A further stabbing followed in September 2024, and in October 2025 a fireworks-related fire on the roof forced an evacuation, with police treating it as suspected arson.

Cost

Dutch asylum reception is funded by central government through the COA. At an illustrative benchmark of about €80 per person per night for a regular centre, the 332 people recorded here on 13 August 2025 imply roughly €9.7m per year. This is an order-of-magnitude figure for context only, not a site-specific invoice — emergency reception typically runs around three times the cost of a regular centre.
