Noodopvang Rotterdam (Schiehaven)

At the Schiehaven (and neighbouring quays) in Rotterdam, the COA houses several hundred asylum seekers on a number of river cruise ships moored along the kade. In 2025 the municipality extended the use of these reception ships until 2027. Reporting centred on the extension of the floating reception locations; documented concerns about poor living conditions on a Rotterdam asylum ship related to the much larger MS Silja at the separate Merwehaven, not to the Schiehaven vessels.

Cost

Dutch asylum reception is funded by central government through the COA. At an illustrative benchmark of about €184 per person per night for emergency reception (noodopvang), the 547 people recorded here on 13 August 2025 imply roughly €37m per year. This is an order-of-magnitude figure for context only, not a site-specific invoice — emergency reception typically runs around three times the cost of a regular centre.
