The Wędrzyn temporary Guarded Centre for Foreigners was a Border Guard detention centre in barracks of the Wędrzyn army training ground (gmina Sulęcin, Lubusz Voivodeship). It opened in September 2021 and was removed from the detention system on 19 August 2022. It is listed for the record: it is no longer in use, and it was never accommodation.

Key facts

Type
Border Guard guarded centre for foreigners (detention)
Operator
Border Guard (Nadodrzański unit), on the grounds of an army training ground. It was a sub-site of the Krosno Odrzańskie guarded centre.[1],[2]
Address
Wędrzyn army training ground (Ośrodek Szkolenia Poligonowego Wojsk Lądowych), Wędrzyn, 69-200 Sulęcin.[2]
Capacity
No operating capacity is given. A Border Guard contingency plan circulated on 21 September 2022, after the closure, lists 600 places at the site. That is a reserve in a plan, not capacity in use.[1]
People held
The Border Guard's reply to the Ombudsman of 1 December 2021 refers to 604 people held there at the time of the events of 25 November 2021.[3]
Who was held
Men only. In its reply of 1 December 2021 the Border Guard said that the guarded centre in Krosno Odrzańskie, together with the Wędrzyn site, were the only guarded centres with a male profile (profil męski).[3]
Status
No longer in use. The last 6 detainees were moved to Przemyśl on 17 August 2022, and from 19 August 2022 the centre was removed from the detention system when the 12-month agreement with the army for the use of the site ran out.[1]
Opening
September 2021. A Border Guard notice of 26 November 2021 says that the guarded centre had operated on the training ground since September.[2]
Position of the pin
The pin marks the village of Wędrzyn, not the barracks. The training ground is large, and the building itself has not been placed.

Background

Guarded centres for foreigners are run by the Border Guard. People are placed in them by court order, pending removal. They hold foreigners, including people who have applied for international protection. They are separate from the open reception centres run by the Office for Foreigners.[4],[5]

The Ombudsman's National Preventive Mechanism visited the centre on 18-21 October 2021. According to the Ombudsman's page, it found conditions below the standard of dignified treatment.[3]

Reported incidents

Incidents connected with this site that official or mainstream sources have reported, each attributed, with the stage reached as the source states it. Suspects are not named. Counts of police interventions are the Interior Ministry's own and are not criminal charges.

The centres run by the Office for Foreigners (UdSC) are the nine that the Interior Ministry (MSWiA) lists in its reply to Sejm interpellation 14750 of 12 May 2026. The number of residents on 31 December 2025 and the 2025 running cost of each centre come from that reply. The ministry gives no total, and the total of PLN 38.9m used on this site is our sum of the nine figures. The running cost excludes staff wages and the allowances paid to people living outside the centres. Capacity for 2025 is published only as a total of 1,525 places (AIDA, citing Office for Foreigners data), so no centre shows a capacity of its own for 2025; where an earlier per-centre figure exists it is shown with its date. Border Guard detention is listed apart and is not accommodation: its 2025 costs and numbers held come from the ministry's replies to interpellations 14740 to 14745 (March 2026), and its places and numbers held at the end of 2025 from AIDA. The Office for Foreigners' own list of centres showed no content when we checked on 4 October 2026, so addresses and positions come from the sources named on each page and are marked approximate where they are not the publisher's own.
