910 documented sites, of which 475 are asylum accommodation. Germany is federal: the Bund funds it, and the sixteen Länder and their municipalities run it, so there is no national register. All sixteen Länder have their state reception tier here; the municipal tier is covered city by city, wherever a city publishes one. Read the group headings before comparing any two numbers on this page.

Sites the authority itself identifies as asylum accommodation: state reception (Erstaufnahme, ANKER, ZUE) and the municipal tier where a city publishes a target group per site.

Mixed-population accommodation, not asylum capacity · 405

Hamburg, Berlin, Bremen and Düsseldorf house asylum seekers, recognised refugees and homeless residents in one system and publish no breakdown per site. These places must never be added to an asylum capacity figure.

Accommodation for people displaced from Ukraine · 17

People displaced from Ukraine hold temporary protection under the EU directive rather than going through the asylum procedure, so these are counted separately.

Immigration detention, not accommodation · 10

NOT accommodation. These facilities hold people pending removal from Germany. Their places are never counted as accommodation capacity of any kind. Some are officially called Aufnahmeeinrichtung, which means reception; the name does not change what they are.

Thousands of smaller dispersed Gemeinschaftsunterkünfte are not here, and neither are Bavaria's roughly 6,300 dezentrale Unterkünfte, which are privately rented flats. Bavaria's interior ministry has twice been asked in writing for a list below Kreis level and has declined, stating it holds no such data. Comprehensive coverage is not achievable for Germany, and this page does not claim it.
