🇳🇱 NetherlandsReception centre (azc / large site)Currently operational

azc Velp GLD (Arnhemsestraatweg)

The reception centre on the Arnhemsestraatweg in Velp (Gelderland) was taken into use by the COA on 29 April 2022. Studio Rheden reported in February 2025 that it housed 80 status holders and 50 unaccompanied minor asylum seekers. On 14 February 2025 three young asylum seekers were wounded in a stabbing there; a large emergency response attended, police arrested a minor, who did not return to the centre, and the COA said the incident began as a room dispute that got out of hand. Studio Rheden called it the third serious incident at the centre within eight months, after incidents in June and July 2024. In June 2025 it reported that Rheden and the COA had agreed to keep the centre open for five more years from 1 May 2025, for up to 145 people, with the number of unaccompanied minors rising from 50 to 62 alongside 80 status holders.

Cost

Dutch asylum reception is funded by central government through the COA. At an illustrative benchmark of about €80 per person per night for a regular centre, the 141 people recorded here on 13 August 2025 imply roughly €4.1m per year. This is an order-of-magnitude figure for context only, not a site-specific invoice, emergency reception typically runs around three times the cost of a regular centre.
