Noodopvang Veendam (Lloydsweg)

A temporary emergency reception centre run by the Dutch reception agency COA opened in the former Wensink car showroom on Lloydsweg in Veendam in mid-April 2024, housing up to 100 asylum seekers including families and single people. The town council agreed to extend the centre for a further 18 months from early 2025, keeping it open until around October 2026, with the council framing it as helping a neighbouring municipality. Local authorities reported that the centre ran smoothly with very few nuisance complaints to police, and residents and press were invited for an open day in April 2024.

Cost

Dutch asylum reception is funded by central government through the COA. At an illustrative benchmark of about €184 per person per night for emergency reception (noodopvang), the 100 people recorded here on 13 August 2025 imply roughly €6.7m per year. This is an order-of-magnitude figure for context only, not a site-specific invoice — emergency reception typically runs around three times the cost of a regular centre.
